Olympus Digital Camera M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm F1.8 Lens Driver
The size of the lens belies its complexity - its optical architecture is made up of a concoction of 9 elements in 6 groups, including 1 high refractive and 3 aspherical elements with a Dual Super aspherical element.
The diaphragm is made up of 7 rounded elements to provide pleasing out-of-focus results. There are no switches or control surfaces on the lens other than the focus ring - all lens functions are controlled by the camera.

The focus ring is an interesting design element of the lens, and we first saw this design on the Olympus 12mm m. The ring can be pulled backward from its default configuration to enter a manual focusing mode, which exposes a distance scale in feet and meters; a distance scale is omnipresent, but isn't of much use unless you pull the focus ring back to display the distance scale.
There is no infrared index. The operation of the focus ring deserves a bit of explanation.

The build quality is solid thanks to a metal lens barrel, and it's easy to switch between manual focus and autofocus. There's also no weather sealing, so your dust- and splash-proof OM-D E-M5 won't be completely protected when this lens is attached.

Despite these quibbles, the lens is a worthy addition to any Micro Four Thirds camera kit. It earns our Editors' Choice for wide-angle lenses for mirrorless cameras.
When mated to my OM-D in good to decent light, it really is instantaneous. Pick an autofocus point and it feels like autofocus confirmation is made before your finger even makes it to the bottom of your half-shutter-press.

Just tap the screen and BOOM, autofocus locked, shutter fired and picture taken all in what feels like a fraction of a second. It almost feels like cheating.

But, like with any other lens mated to a camera with contrast autofocus, when the light goes down, your autofocus time goes up. Even so, the autofocus works well in low light and I rarely received an autofocus error or missed focus. If having the fastest autofocus speed possible is paramount to you, you should seriously take a look at this lens and maybe a few others like the Olympus 12mm f2 and the Panasonic-Leica 25mm f1.
